This is one of the main bridges, crossing a future Sublic road at a considerable angle with a skew-span of B-3/4 feet.
The foundations were started in the latter part r 1006 and the abutments are now up to within about 3 hot of the level of the bedstones for girders. The sq- ankment is practically up to its full height on both ides of the bridge. Serious cracks bave developed in he south abutment and there has in addition been a side-
ong movement from west, to east, From records furnishei y the Chief Resident Bagineer, we find that st the west hd of this abutment, settlesett to the extent of 1 7-1/2" as occured and movement still continues. The north butsent has also cracked and considerable settlement has axon place. We further fiad that the south shubsent is verhanging to the extent of 3-1/2 inches, whilst the north butsent has an overhang of 1-1/2" at the west quoin.
Xe wore informed that the west wing wall of the south butpont is founded on solid ground ("ook or a houlder)
ilst the east wing wall is on soft alluvial de josit of onsiderable depth. This doubtless accounts for the side-
and movengat which has occured. Boriage which we have ad taken show that the coli) ground is at an average Both of about 39 feet below the future rodd level.
The materials and workmanship are good and wo are opinion that no blane can be attached to either the
Inese Contractor or lessrs Leigh & Orange, the first
whom put in the foundations and a portion of the abutments
ilst the latter are completing the work.
In our opinion, the serious condition of the bridge
it stands is due to the inadequate provision made to
Bure the security of the foundations. We consider that
